YouTube is good at hosting the whole video. It is less good at remembering the one stretch you actually use. A share link can start at a timestamp. It does not, by itself, stop at the end of the useful bit, and it does not live in a library of your other moments.
What Vimpse stores
For a YouTube Vimpse the app keeps the video ID, the public title (from YouTube’s oEmbed endpoint when you fetch it), a public thumbnail URL, your start and finish times in milliseconds, and any title or tags you add. The video file stays on YouTube. A Vimpse does not copy the YouTube video. It remembers the source and the part you chose.
How to save part of a YouTube video on Android
Vimpse is an Android app. Google Play is coming soon; until then this is the method the app uses. There is no iOS app yet.
- On the phone, open the video in YouTube and share it to Vimpse, or paste the URL in Vimpse.
- Wait until the duration is known, then set start and finish.
- Preview. If the bit is right, save it to a Wall.
Playback
Inside Vimpse, playback starts at your start and stops at your finish. YouTube may show its own ads in the embedded player. YouTube Premium in the YouTube app may not apply to that embed. Opening the Vimpse in YouTube starts at the same time; YouTube cannot be told to stop at your finish.
Vimpse does not download YouTube video files, extract audio, or play YouTube in the background. That is a product limit and a YouTube API Services rule, not a slogan. If you wanted an MP4 file, that is a different job — save a section without downloading.
Chapters are the creator’s map, not yours
Creators can add video chapters so viewers jump between sections the uploader defined. That helps when the chapter is exactly your moment. It does not help when the useful 90 seconds sit inside a ten-minute chapter, or when you want the same moment next to a family clip and a recipe on your own Wall.
